Maxwell Elementary & Middle School

Maxwell Elementary is a PK-8 Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Americas School developed in coordination with the US Army Corps of Engineers. The master planned two-story partial replacement/renovation project is being completed in multiple integrated phases to reduce overall project costs and impact to students and will provide educational services for military dependents living in permanent housing on Maxwell Air Force Base. The scope of the project includes all planning, programming, design, architectural, engineering and support services necessary to prepare design-bid-build documents. The school is programmed and designed around a uniquely branded 21st century STEAM learning approach in that a variety of flexible extend learning spaces are incorporated into all areas of the school, promoting collaboration and accommodating groups of various sizes. Operable wall partitions separate learning studios and grade-level neighborhood hubs, an information center and a flex computing center to facilitate project-based collaborative learning amongst the various age groups. Staff and student work areas and technology service centers will occupy common spaces. A performance commons purposes circulation areas for an added school gathering space along with a new gymnasium which also serves as a FEMA Tornado Safe Room to protect student and faculty in case of an emergency. The project scope includes complex phased demolition and reconstruction of areas of the school that were constructed during the early-1960s and 80s while constructing new facilities and renovating the remaining areas for their current and future functions. Demolition of approximately 58,724 SF of existing facilities and out-buildings along with the new addition will approximate a new 105,479 SF full new school.
