ZYSCOVICH

Temple Beth Sholom

Temple Beth Sholom project included the design of a new chapel and youth center. Zyscovich did extensive research on both architect Percival Goodman, one of the best-known American synagogue architects that designed Temple Beth Sholom and the architectural history of the synagogue itself. They obtained Goodman’s original drawings and comments and evaluated their mission in regard to the architect’s intent and the present state of the campus – a compilation of original, acquired, and renovated designs, additions, and site modifications. Ultimately, Zyscovich devised a plan in which the new architecture would not compete with the unique form of Goodman’s original. The existing sanctuary was retained and squared off in harmony with a new school facade. The new “welcome center” for coffee, discussion, and lounging floats between the two. Outside, an elevated rear courtyard overlooks the water in a landscaped design.
